What I Do
Organisations invest in technology because they believe it will make their business better at what they do. Also, we know that organisations that have world class IT teams have better margins and higher growth than their industry peers. In these circumstances perhaps the only question worth asking is how do you create a high performing IT team?
My clients are senior executives, CIOs and technology professionals who are committed to delivering the potential of IT. Get in touch if:
I work with C Suite executives of small to mid sized organisations to improve the value they receive from their technology investments.
Today many small to mid sized organisations face a similar dilemma. In a world where "going digital" is on every CEO's agenda, how do you ensure your success and secure high quality, strategic IT capability at an affordable price? The answer is to engage the services of a virtual CIO. As a virtual CIO I commit to working with your organisation for a minimum of 12 months to manage your journey to value delivery. While delivering value from IT is a simple enough mandate to understand, from the work I do with my clients actually making it happen can be a significant challenge. Yet the payoff for getting this right is substantial. Organisations with high performing IT Teams outperform their industry peers by an average of 40%.
The services I provide in this capacity are tailored to your organisation's specific needs. This is achieved by conducting an IT Value Assessment (a detailed assessment of your current technology and digital capabilities as well as the current performance of your IT team) as a precursor to commencing a CIO as a Service engagement and by agreeing a predetermined set of performance and financial metrics. CIO as a Service is ideal for organisations who are driving change and are in need of the skills of a senior IT executive but will struggle to secure them due to current demand and affordability.
I work with CIOs of organisations who want to improve the performance of their IT team through targeted skill and capability development.
Delivering value from IT is a simple enough mandate to understand, however from the work I do with my clients I appreciate actually making it happen can be a significant challenge. Many organisations struggle to understand what value means in the context of their organisation. Even when this has been clearly articulated there can be challenges determining the right path to take and ensuring you have access to the required skills and capabilities needed to be successful.
These issues can be further compounded by the current performance of your IT environment. Unreliable and ineffective systems, a costly environment, poor project delivery capability and disenfranchised customers are common issues facing many organisations. If this all sounds familiar then your technology investment is unlikely to be delivering the value your organisation wants and needs and worse still, it may even be eroding value.
The services I provide in this capacity are tailored to your organisation's specific needs. This is achieved by conducting an IT Capability Assessment (a detailed assessment of the skills and capabilities of your IT organisation and its people) as a precursor to recommending a targeted approach to address your organisation's specific requirements. This could include one on one mentoring for IT leaders, workshop training or an extended period of support as IT teams make incremental improvements to their IT capabilities.
I work with executive teams who require support to define their digital strategy and ensure they turn their strategy into tangible actions.
If you are a regular reader of my blog you will know that I am fairly obsessed with the notion of IT Value. This obsession stems from a belief that IT has huge potential to make our lives and organisations substantially better and that it is our job, as an industry, to ensure that this value is delivered. You probably also know my view that in general we fail to deliver this value. The evidence of this is captured extensively in both IT and business literature. Why is this?
Through working with my clients to reverse this trend I believe the bottom line is, if you want to consistently deliver value from your technology investments you must have an effective digital strategy and the right skills and capabilities to implement it successfully.
For a digital strategy to be effective it must be owned by you the client. Therefore, when I am engaged by a client to assist them to define their digital strategy I work as a consultant, facilitator and coach, advising you through process. I provide proven IP and a collaborative approach designed to ensure you will achieve strong stakeholder engagement and quality outcomes. In addition I personally facilitate all workshops required to co-create the strategy. These workshops will cover understanding the business context, developing an enterprise activity model, conducting a technology assessment as well as conducting a capability assessment. Through the outputs of these workshops we will create a comprehensive strategy that not only identifies the portfolio of work required to drive the strategic outcomes required but also the change and transition plan, the benefits management plan, the target architecture and the execution strategy.
